International Food Safety Standards Protect Consumers and Farmers

As many African economies grow, governments are dealing with complex public health issues including a pronounced need for updated food safety regulatory systems. While food safety modernization is an essential part of effective agricultural regulation, this has also resulted in an increase in non-tariff barriers to trade. Harmonized standards within regions and among trading partners – and ideally harmonized with global standards – facilitates agricultural trade, improving access to markets for farmers, and access to safe food for consumers.
AFSI has four focus areas in promoting harmonized regulations: maximum pesticide residue levels (MRLs), standards for phytosanitary inspection at borders, animal health sanitary programs, and food safety measures.
