In Nigeria’s food safety ecosystem, historical fragmentation between ministries and regulatory agencies often created conflicting mandates and costly port delays. But through the Africa Food Safety Initiative (AFSI)—supported by USDA-FAS and led by the University of Missouri’s CAFNR International Programs, an extraordinary transformation took place.
By institutionalizing multi-stakeholder Technical Working Groups (TWGs), key regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and academic institutions joined forces to build a unified, science-based food safety framework.
Reporting directly to the National Food Safety Management Committee (NFSMC), these TWGs ensure that expert recommendations move swiftly into binding national policy. Together, this coalition proved that when government, industry, and academia sit at the same table, regulatory modernization moves from vision to concrete reality.
